For the past several months, Lunatic Leftists been posting the same rhetorical question on various social media platforms: “Is this what you voted for?” Typically, they post this question along with an image or video that horrifies them, such as police officers arresting criminals, public school students reading at grade level, or women playing sports against other women.
Like most argumentative strategies of the Lunatic Left, this one is failing spectacularly. Not because rhetorical questions themselves are ineffective; on the contrary, they have been a part of academic discussion and public debate for centuries.
But when perpetually misguided Leftists ask sane, rational conservatives, “Is this what you voted for? … the answer comes back a resounding “YES!” Yes, we voted to deport illegal aliens, particularly those who commit crimes up to and including murder. Yes, we voted to identify and eliminate wasteful government spending. Yes, we voted to strengthen our military by removing men who dress up like women and post cringeworthy photos online. Asking conservatives this rhetorical question has not only failed to change our opinions; it has confirmed our belief that we made the right choice at the ballot box last November.
Not to be deterred by logic, Leftists sometimes tailor their rhetorical questions to specific events, asking things like, “So, we’re arresting judges now?” The answer to this question is slightly more nuanced, but still … “YES!” Yes, to arresting judges who break the law. Just like the answer is yes to arresting politicians who break the law. Yes to arresting plumbers, figure skaters, or bird watchers who break the law. Unless your IQ is lower than Whoopi Goldberg’s, you’re sensing a pattern here: Law abiding citizens support the arrests of those who break the law.
The question itself is meant to imply that judges are being arrested in huge numbers, presumably at the behest of a tyrannical leader who wants to consolidate his power by silencing widespread dissent. In reality, we’re talking about an individual Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge who was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice on April 25. She is accused of helping an illegal immigrant escape from law enforcement officials after standing trial in her courtroom. Again, law abiding citizens generally don’t support those who break the law - or who assist other law breakers in any way.
For years, teachers have assured reluctant-to-participate students that, “There’s no such thing as a stupid question.” Lunatic Leftists proven this statement to be categorically false. In the process, they’ve strengthened conservatives’ resolve by misusing a centuries-old rhetorical strategy.
Is this really what they were trying to do?
