Because ... DEMOCRACY!
Yet another Leftist distortion of an originally positive term
Unless you’ve been living under a sound-proof rock, you have undoubtedly heard Leftists wailing about the importance of voting for Joe Biden Michelle Obama Kamala Harris in order to “preserve our democracy.”
Like most Leftist arguments, this one fails on a number of levels. Whether one believes that the “democracy vs. representative republic” debate is purely semantic (American citizens are, of course, allowed to vote directly on some laws and policies) or politically significant (the framers went out of their way to avoid the pitfalls of a “majority rule” government), any competent 8th grader will tell you that the US government is not, strictly speaking, a true democracy.
Even if you’re willing to give Leftists the benefit of the doubt and assume that their use of the word “democracy” simply refers to the will of the people, their original argument still falls flatter than a Pete Buttigieg appearance at a NASCAR event. Kamala Harris’ name was not on the ballot for any Democrat party primaries, so she didn’t receive votes. From actual voters. Who were actually participating in the “democratic” process of actually voting for a candidate. So … remind me again how her candidacy represents democracy?
In all fairness to Harris, she wasn’t listed on any primary ballots because the sleazy powers-that-be in the Democrat party didn’t decide to force Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 election until it became clear he couldn’t win. (Sharp as a tack? Check. Promoting nonsensical, regressive policies that will turn our once-great country in to a third-world hell hole? Check. Able to defeat Donald Trump in the general election? Uh oh. Quick, somebody call George Clooney!)
But there is no reason to believe that a Harris presidency would truly represent the will of the people. The day that Biden was forced out of the race, Harris’s approval rating among Americans was lower than 40%. The last time she ran for president, she dropped out of the Democrat primaries while polling in single digits. Her insipid, meandering answers and nervous cackle have made her the object of scorn all over the world.
If Leftists truly cared about the will of the people, surely they could have found a process of selecting a presidential candidate more “democratic” than the one they ultimately chose: 1) Joe Biden endorsing Harris via a letter drafted in a COVID bunker and released on social media, and 2) the Democrat party holding an online roll call of delegates and subsequently anointing Harris as the candidate.
Truth is, the Left isn’t interested in “democratic” elections any more than they are interested in the will of the people. They’re interested in force-feeding voters a radical agenda that will turn the United States into a filthy, forgotten footnote. Picture people waiting in lines for toilet paper in the old Soviet Union. Or +70% poverty rates in Venezuela. Or rampant homelessness, addiction, and crime in California - where Kamala Harris was democratically elected attorney general in 2010.
How’d that work out?
